Picture this: you’re sitting in the driver’s seat of your brand new car gazing in awe at your pristine surrounds. But wait! What’s that? Something in the air near the rear-vision mirror. A fleck, or few… swirling, spiralling downwards until they land on the dash, and just sit there. Your car’s first bit of dust. You mop it up quickly with your finger and swear to keep this cabin spotless forever.

Fast-forward six months, and if you throw a magazine on the dash, there’s a plume of dust so thick you have to pull over.

Let’s get on top of it and remove that dust from your car for good. Here’s how.

1. Keep a duster handy

Keep a quality duster

or some microfibre cloths in the glovebox to ensure you always have a weapon at hand to help you win the war on dust.

You might also invest in some detailing brushes

to reach those out-of-the-way spots.

2. Be vigilant at vacuuming

Just like nature, dust abhors a vacuum. So invest in a car vacuum, and use it regularly.

Something small and cordless

can be good for getting in those nooks and crannies. If you’ve got allergies you might want to consider a vacuum with a HEPA filter.

3. Spray away

An interior detailing spray not only gets your car cabin looking good as new, but gives you a serious serotonin boost as you discover the joy of cleaning.

An anti-static interior detailer

can help repel dust afterwards, too.

4. Wind up those windows

You can’t totally exclude dust – a lot of it comes from outside. In dustier-than-usual environments such as gravel roads, drive with your windows up and pop the aircon on to recirculate and keep more of those micro particles out.

5. Seal and filter

Make sure your door seals are in good condition – if you notice cracks or other sorts of damage, get them fixed. Ensure your mechanic is changing your cabin air filters as needed, and your aircon is operating as it should.

6. Call on the pros

You can keep your car interior in great condition by sticking to a regular cleaning routine. But every now and then, it doesn’t hurt to get some professional help. Professional car detailers can get to the spots you might not be able to reach. So splurge on a professional detail once a year before the dust settles.
