Following a 3-month period of adjustment of becoming first time parents and leading a new life, Jonathan Ramm’s partner was very keen to return to work as an Insurance Lawyer. They discussed various options about how they could manage all the elements of family, personal and work commitment.

After reviewing the company’s parental leave policy, they decided the best option would be for Jonathan to work part-time. Shell has been very supportive of the first-time father and was instrumental to enable the both of them to split the responsibilities looking after their daughter, whilst also fulfilling their work commitment.

As an engineer with Shell, Jonathan’s role was shuffled following a reorganisation in the engineering division during this period; so the part-time option was ideal and Jonathan could still fulfil his team lead responsibilities. He then had a simple engagement with HR and his Line Manager on the situation.

His request was approved and Jonathan was transitioned into a part-time role where he worked three days per week for the last four months of 2018. The flexibility provided by Shell through this process was a key enabler to the success of
this arrangement.
