Shell’s commitment to Indigenous people
Shell Australia respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners throughout Australia and their continued connection to culture, land, waters, skies and community.
We pay our respects to Elders past and present for their ongoing care for Country, including the lands on which we live, work and operate.
Shell is committed to building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities based on honesty, integrity and respect.
We do this by working with Traditional Owners and Indigenous people living in the communities in and around our operating footprint to make a positive difference, through jobs and training, cultural connection, educational outcomes and support for Indigenous-owned businesses.
Over the past few years, Shell Australia’s Indigenous Participation Plan has driven sustainable change in core focus areas including employment, procurement and relationships.
Shell Australia Reconciliation Action Plan
The Indigenous participation plans, focusing on employment, procurement and relationships have set the foundation and paved the way for the development of the Shell Australia Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
The Shell Australia RAP 2025-2028 brings greater transparency to Shell’s vision of an Australia where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples enjoy economic prosperity and equitable access to opportunities in the energy sector.
Shell will contribute to this vision by promoting employment, procurement, education and training as pathways to prosperity; by cultivating respectful relationships in areas where Shell can have the greatest impact and by celebrating and uplifting the cultures and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Our commitments towards reconciliation are grounded in Shell’s values of honesty, integrity and respect. As we seek to be valued members of the communities in which we operate and to form long-lasting relationships with these communities, reconciliation is deeply embedded in our approach.
Learn more about how we engage with Indigenous people
Shell works with Traditional Owners and Indigenous stakeholders, particularly those in our operational footprint. We strive to strengthen relationships and understand their needs and aspirations, enabling positive outcomes and supporting communities to reach their full potential. This includes operating with the consent of the Traditional Owners in our areas of operation and understanding the cultural values and significance of the location.

Traditional Owner groups across Shell Australia’s operations
Shell acknowledges that Indigenous peoples are Australia’s First Peoples and the Traditional Owners of the land and waters on which we work and live.
Support from Traditional Owners in the areas we operate is critical to our success and strengthens our organisation. Through employment, procurement and social investment, we deliver long-lasting outcomes for Traditional Owners and other Indigenous Australians over the life of our projects.
