Energy Transition Challenge: Searching for New Energies
Energy fuels both the global economy and our everyday lives, and with a global improvement of living standards and population growth, we are seeing the continued rise in demand for energy. The big challenge is how to provide much more energy while at the same time significantly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This is what we call the energy challenge.
Working towards a low carbon future
We recognise the significance of climate change, along with the role energy plays in helping people achieve and maintain a good quality of life. A key role for society – and for Shell – is to find ways to provide much more energy with less carbon dioxide. This global energy transition therefore requires a huge undertaking – producing and consuming energy in a different way. We need to design our economies, communities and lives to thrive on these energy systems.

Explore one of the most innovative companies in the world
There has never been a more exciting time to work in the energy industry.
With a career at Shell, you’ll have a part to play in uniquely innovative projects which will provide unbeatable experience.
We have a track record of world firsts, from Shell Pearl GTL, the world’s largest gas-to-liquids plant, to Prelude, the world’s first floating liquefied natural gas facility. These aren’t just engineering achievements. They are a product of a business that genuinely prizes progress, where you will be constantly encouraged to explore new ways of thinking and working.
A World Class Company needs World Class Talent
We’re also one of the world’s best-known brands. With around 92,000 employees in more than 70 countries, we operate on a scale few can rival. You’ll have the opportunity to work with brilliant people from all around the world, sharing expertise and points of view that will enrich your experience.
The scale of our challenge is exciting too. Global demand for energy is rapidly rising, and outpacing supply. We offer a Graduate Programme that will develop both your professional expertise and your leadership potential. Where you will work and learn as an integral part of a talented global team and be inspired by where your career could take you.

Day in the life of an Electrical Engineer at Shell
Video footage
A low-angle shot captures Firas and a colleague in red coveralls and white hard hats bearing the Shell logo, standing against a backdrop of a cloudy sky and smiling and giving thumbs-up gestures toward the camera. Text transitions in at the far left of the frame to bubble-popping sound FX. We transition from this scene with a swirling camera effect.
Firas
I usually start my morning at 5:30 AM.
[Text displays]
05:30
Video footage and graphic
Firas, partially visible in a dimly lit room, wakes up and lifts the white, textured linen as he climbs out of bed. At this point, a yellow box with a digital timestamp appears in the upper-right corner of the frame. In the lower-left, an animated analog alarm clock rocks from side to side, accompanied by a beeping alarm tone..
Firas
When I do, I love to self-meditate.
Video footage and graphic
We see the white comforter being fluffed above a neatly made bed with white pillows and a green upholstered headboard. In the background, an open door reveals a bathroom with a sink and a lit vanity mirror. The scene shifts to Firas standing in his living room, where a gray couch and two windows with blinds are behind him. Dressed in a gray sweatshirt and red pants, he raises his hands, palms forward, in meditation. A yellow meditating guru icon fades in at the extreme right of the frame, accompanied by a gonging sound.
Firas
Once I’m done getting ready, I love to make myself some breakfast.
[Text displays]
Bagel… yum!!
Video footage
Firas stands at his bathroom sink, brushing his teeth with an electric toothbrush. He wears a sweatshirt and sweatpants. A yellow rubber duck sits among various toiletries on the counter. He leans forward, splashing water onto his face from the running faucet. His reflection is visible in a large mirror, with a closet of hanging clothes in the background. The scene shifts to a time-lapse. In his modern kitchen, Firas, now in a gray sweatshirt and red pants, spreads cream cheese on a bagel. A tub of cream cheese sits open on the counter. White cabinets, a microwave, a kettle, and a toaster line the background. At this point, a yellow textbox displays text in the upper left corner of the frame.
Firas
I just got to the office to start our day.
[Text displays]
08:00
Video footage
The scene transitions to user-recorded video showing Firas speaking into the camera from inside his car. At this point, a yellow box with a digital timestamp appears onscreen in the upper right corner of the frame. As Firas continues talking, he opens the car door and turns to climb out.
Firas
The office is located in Monaca, Pennsylvania. I moved here from Texas, and I’m loving every single bit of it.
Video footage
More user-recorded video shows Firas smiling down at the camera as he slings a bag over his shoulder. He turns and walks away from his car, which is parked beneath a structure with a pale ceiling. The scene shifts to a panning view of a nighttime cityscape, showcasing a skyline with illuminated buildings, including one with green and red lights at the top. Fireworks burst in the sky, and a brightly lit Christmas tree is displayed against a building in the foreground, evoking a festive celebration.
Firas
My role as an electrical engineer is to support operators and the production line.
Video footage and graphic
Transitioning to time-lapse footage, we see Firas and colleagues, many of them in signature red Shell coveralls, seated around a large conference table in a bright, modern room with several computer monitors and office equipment visible in the background, suggesting a meeting or training session. The scene shifts to another time-lapse, where Firas and an operator sit across from each other at a small table in a brightly lit room with a blue accent wall and a large window. Each has a laptop in front of them. An animated hammer-and-wrench icon rotates against the large screen mounted to the blue wall. We transition from this scene with a swirling camera effect.
Firas
Sometimes, to unwind from a busy morning, I’ll hit the office gym during lunchtime.

Video footage
Wide-angle footage shows Firas in a gym, adjusting a weight on a weight training machine. Rowing machines and treadmills are visible in the background, along with several red accent walls. At this point, a yellow box with a digital timestamp appears onscreen in the lower left corner of the frame. The scene shifts to Firas performing an incline bench press on the weight training machine, followed by a hanging leg raise exercise on a pull-up bar.
Firas
Shell really encourages you to take on the responsibilities, which has really grown my confidence as a graduate.
Video footage
We transition to a series of shots showing Firas standing at a desk in an office environment, working on a computer in front of large monitors. The ceiling above features a grid of square tiles with fluorescent lighting.
Firas
This site in Monaca nurtures you to be the best in your discipline by having a very supportive culture.
Video footage and graphic
Wide-angle footage shows a modern, well-lit lobby at Shell Polymers, Monaca, featuring green chairs and white round tables. Firas walks towards and then turns to pose, arms outstretched, in front of a wall displaying five large posters, book-ended by Shell Polymers-branded posters. The five posters highlight the company's values, ownership, innovation, partnership, communityship, and customer-centricity, each accompanied by images of employees. At this point, a yellow-and-grey smiling graduate icon appears onscreen in the lower right corner of the frame. Next, we see Firas back up to stand in front of a yellow and white wall with the text "Shell Polymers" in red and blue letters, and "Make the experience matter" in black letters. Firas smiles and gives a thumbs-up gesture.
Firas
Today, one of my units went down, so I’ve had to analyze and fix the problem…

15:00
Video footage
Wide-angle footage shows an industrial facility with complex piping and structures, featuring a JLG Ultra Boom lift in the foreground. Various industrial equipment and buildings are visible in the background, many emitting smoke. The scene shifts to tracking footage of a Shell employee, seen from behind, walking through the industrial area, looking around and upwards. At this point, a yellow box with a digital timestamp appears onscreen in the upper left corner of the frame.
Firas
Making sure everything is ready to go back online, fixed and safe.
Video footage
Close-up footage of the display screen of an electric field meter held by a Shell employee. Next to him, a colleague stirs a pen-like object through a white granular substance, then uses a probe to measure its static electricity.
Firas
I’m finally home now. I’m going to cook a quick dinner, then I’m heading to sleep.
[Text displays]
19:00
Video footage
We transition to medium-view footage showing Firas back at home in his sleek, modern kitchen, pouring hot water from an electric kettle into a cup. At this point, a yellow box with a digital timestamp appears onscreen in the lower left corner of the frame. The scene shifts to a profile view of Firas sitting on his gray couch in the warmly lit living room, holding a plate as he eats his dinner, looking relaxed.
Firas
And that’s my day. Bye.
[Text displays]
Zzzzzzzzz…..
22:00
Video footage and graphic
We end on a shot of Firas lying in bed, partially visible in a dimly lit room, covered by his fluffy white comforter, his head resting on a white pillow. At this point, a yellow text box displays text in the lower left corner of the frame, and a yellow box with a digital timestamp appears in the upper left corner of the frame. This final shot transitions out of frame in the shape of a contracting Pecten, gradually giving way to a clean white background.

Stage 1 – Online Assessments
Stage 1 – Online Assessments
After you’ve submitted your application, you’ll be asked to complete four online game-based assessments. These games measure various cognitive abilities and your working style preferences by presenting you with different challenges.
Altogether this will take approximately 20 minutes and will need to be completed within five days of receiving the assessment invite.
On-Demand Video interview
This short, self-recorded video interview is an opportunity for you to tell us about yourself and your qualifications. You’ll also see some of our current graduates who will ask you a series of pre-recorded competency-based questions. You may record the interview at any internet-enabled location at a time most convenient to you. For each question, you’ll have 30 seconds to prepare and 3 minutes to record your answer.
Stage 2 – Final Assessment
Stage 2 – Final Assessment
This is the last assessment stage. It consists of a face to face session with two professionals at Shell. During this session you will be asked to discuss your thoughts on a case study, which you will have a chance to review 48 hours prior to the session. You will need to read and prepare for this, but don’t worry, more information will be provided closer to the time. On the day of your assessment, you will be assigned a topic relating to your case study and then given 20 minutes (30 for non-native English speakers) to prepare a 5-minute presentation. This presentation will be followed by questions and additional scenarios from the assessors for up to 30 minutes. After this, will be an interview - this is where you have the chance to get to know us, and for us to get to know you better. To make the interview process more convenient and comfortable, we are leveraging the latest digital technology to bring the experience to you – wherever you may be.
