Sale of Shell's Downstream business in Australia
In February 2014, Vitol announced it had reached a binding agreement with Shell to acquire its Australian Downstream business (excluding Aviation) for a total consideration of A$2.9 billion (US$2.6 billion).
Following on from the sale, Viva Energy Australia (“Viva Energy”) was launched and is the exclusive licensee of the Shell brand in Australia.
The sale included the:
- Retail business;
- Commercial Fuels;
- Geelong Refinery;
- Sales & Marketing; and
- Supply & Distribution.
The sale also included a Trademark Licence Agreement, which will see the Shell brand remain at over 900 truck stops and service stations Australia wide – with customers still able to buy Shell branded quality fuels and lubricants and products to meet their needs.
The Geelong refinery is now operated by Viva Energy Australia and will continue to manufacture high quality Shell branded products including Shell V-Power.
