The rise of electric vehicles in the last decade is the most high-profile element of this sustainability push, but it’s not the only initiative. Car makers are looking for ways to use more recycled materials, reduce energy consumption when manufacturing and cut emissions across the entire lifecycle of each vehicle.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPerhaps the best example of this is the Polestar 0 project, an endeavour by the Swedish-Chinese electric brand to make a car that is carbon neutral without any offsetting of emissions. That means tackling the huge task of creating a car that can be designed, manufactured and driven without creating any carbon footprint across that whole process.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt is a monumental task, with most car makers acknowledging that the production of any vehicle, even an electric one, produces carbon emissions. Carbon offsetting, most typically a process of investing in environmental projects, such a reforestation, renewable energy or energy efficiency, can help reduce carbon emissions to the equivalent of the cars emitting them. This has been a staple of the car industry and corporate fleets for years.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBy going one step further, Polestar hopes it can make a positive impact on the environment and set a new standard for the industry. Project 0 is being led by Hans Pehrson, the Volvo engineer responsible for the C30 Electric, who is in charge of a team of specially chosen engineers to achieve a goal that Polestar itself admits is a “moonshot.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Achieving climate neutrality is an absolute must for our future for all consumer products,” Pehrson explained at the launch of the project in 2021. “Cars are complex, they consist of tens of thousands of components, and rely on intricate layering of suppliers and sub-manufacturers. Making a car climate-neutral is therefore not only an extremely important challenge but an extremely difficult one. Understanding and accepting the challenge is the first step; getting all the way there will require that we collaborate in ways that have never existed before.
