In some cases, these wastes may contain mercury or low level \u003Cb\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https://www.shell.com.au/about-us/projects-and-locations/the-crux-project/glossary.html#norm\"\u003Enaturally occurring radioactive materials\u003C/a\u003E\u003C/b\u003E.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ESegregating wastes on all vessels operating in the Prelude \u003Ca href=\"https://www.shell.com.au/about-us/projects-and-locations/the-crux-project/glossary.html\"\u003E\u003Cb\u003Eactivity area\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/a\u003E is the vital first step in the waste management process. Initial sorting depends on the properties and ultimate disposal destination of each waste.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EWaste products are stored in appropriately labelled containers within a dedicated area prior to transportation onshore for reuse, recycling, treatment or disposal. The planned management of all wastes is unlikely to result in any impacts.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAt any time, improper management or handling of wastes during storage, transportation or transfer may result in accidental releases and create unplanned impacts.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIn the event of an accidental release, the waste storage container volumes, and the nature of the surrounding environment mean any impacts are likely to be of short duration and highly localised.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EGiven the typically small volumes of wastes that could be released during such an accident, potential impacts to marine life are expected to be limited to individual animals.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAccidental losses of hazardous or non-hazardous wastes may result in pollution, debris or other contaminants entering the marine environment within the \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https://www.shell.com.au/about-us/projects-and-locations/the-crux-project/glossary.html#potential-influence\"\u003Eplanning area\u003C/a\u003E\u003C/strong\u003E.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAny accidental release of hazardous waste may have toxic effects on the environment and may also impact on the quality of water and sediments.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EMarine debris could have negative impacts on the physical environment and native marine animals.
