Occupying 22 hectares of land at Burleigh Street, Newport Terminal is Shell’s major fuel distribution point in Victoria. Newport Terminal has 40 storage tanks with a total capacity of 140 million litres and vehicle filling gantries for fuels, solvents and lubricating oils.

Newport Terminal also houses an administration building and workshop. It also has warehousing facilities for packaged lubricating oils and solvents. All these products are distributed across eastern Australia and exported overseas.

Each year, the terminal distributes about 2800 million litres of petrol, diesel, aviation fuels and solvents across Victoria and the New South Wales Riverina district. Shell uses road transport to distribute bulk and packed fuel and petroleum products to its customers.  Aviation fuels are delivered by pipeline to Tullamarine Airport.

The terminal receives its bulk fuels via pipelines from Shell’s Geelong oil refinery. Road tankers also deliver some additional lubricating oils and solvents from Geelong Refinery. Facilities are also in place to receive fuels by ship.

Approximately 130 people are employed at the terminal.

    Emergency sirens
    When you hear a siren:
Local residents may have heard the sirens of the various industrial facilities in the area.  These are the emergency 'alarm' and 'all clear' sirens, which are regularly tested to check that they are in working order.

Shell Newport Terminal tests both its alarm and all clear sirens each Thursday at 1.30pm for approximately 15 seconds and 30 seconds respectively.

There is no need for people to take any action when they hear the test sirens.

    Alarm siren:
This is an alternating pitch siren. In the event of an emergency, the alarm siren will sound for at least one minute or more. People should remain indoors when they hear this siren and wait for instructions from the Emergency Services.

    All clear siren:
This is a continuous siren for about 30 seconds which signals there is no longer an emergency.
