Shell Geelong refinery is committed to providing assistance to not-for-profit organisations that are seeking funding for projects beneficial to the local community.

The Shell Employee Community Grants Committee has been established to consider grant applications with an education focus or objective (including, but not limited to, projects which encourage an interest in science and technology). It is focused on initiatives that will benefit Geelong's northern suburbs community.

The committee calls for submissions twice yearly (usually in February and September) and assesses applications according to a set of criteria and guidelines.  The maximum amount an organisation can apply for is $5000 (per round).

Debbie Williams is Chairman of the Committee and is also the refinery's hydrocarbon stock analyst.

“The committee provides Shell employees with a unique opportunity to decide on the allocation of community grants as a team, and to engage directly with community agencies and residents.” says Debbie.

    Limeburners Link training session

Limeburners Link provides free training in Conservation and Land Management

Limeburners Link is an initiative of Greening Australia supported by Shell and the City of Greater Geelong that aims to enhance the natural environment of Limeburners Bay, an estuary on the shores of Corio Bay.

The bay is home to a variety of sea life and is a haven for large numbers of migratory water birds.  It is listed internationally as a Ramsar site because of its significant environmental values.  However, issues such as degraded native grasses, and the presence of weeds, have damaged this precious area.

The Limeburners Link programme allows up to 10 local residents to undertake the Certificate training 1 and 2 in Land Management and Conservation.

Glastonbury's efforts to strengthen community connectedness in the northern suburbs has been made possible through the financial support of Shell Geelong refinery between 2009-2011.

Water Smart Kids is a new programme managed by the City of Greater Geelong (CoGG).  It expands on the refinery's support since 2004 of CoGG's Learn to Swim programme.

As part of Water Smart Kids, a minimum of 240 northern suburbs children in grades two, three and four will undertake weekly swimming lessons at Waterworld. The refinery has linked its support of Water Smart Kids to its safety programme and will contribute additional funds if certain targets are met.

Based on the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia's swim and survive programme, Water Smart Kids will give children an opportunity they may not otherwise have to develop their stroke technique, water confidence and survival skills.

Through the support of Shell Geelong refinery, the CoGG will deliver Water Smart Kids between 2011-2013.
