Shell Maintenance Work Place Safety Benefits Sick Children

12/11/2009

A safety initiative linked to Shell Geelong Refinery’s recent maintenance programme will result in a donation today of just short of $100,000 for medical equipment in the Children’s Ward at the Geelong Hospital.

Shell, United Group and Fluor, created the ‘Gift for Kids’ initiative to encourage workplace safety and about 20 other smaller contractors involved in the maintenance project participated.

For every injury-free day worked at the refinery during the Shell maintenance project, the funds have been contributed for medical equipment to help with Barwon Health’s redevelopment of Children’s Ward at the Geelong Hospital.

"I am proud of the safety performance and of the cooperation between the contractors and Shell in contributing towards a significant donation to such a worthy cause. We hope it will make a real difference to the health of children in the Geelong region,” said refinery General Manager, Mark Schubert.

The initiative, aimed at keeping employees safe at work while supporting the community, has raised $96,088.36 for new dash monitors and electric beds to complement the works being undertaken in the Children’s Ward.  Of this, Shell’s contribution was $50,000.

Executive Director of the Barwon Health Foundation, Gavin Seidel, said: “The Children’s Ward redevelopment is a partnership between the community and Barwon Health to deliver improved outcomes for children and their families in our region. The Shell maintenance project contribution is greatly appreciated and will complement the first stage of works that will include a high dependency room with 24-hour care for the sickest children, en suites in rooms with improved facilities and pieces of medical equipment.”
