Parramatta Terminal ethanol spill contained

26/06/2009

Shell can confirm there was an accident involving a truck at the entrance to its Parramatta Terminal and Clyde Refinery at 7:50 pm yesterday evening.

Approximately 7000 litres of ethanol escaped from a gouge on the side of the truck after it made contact with a fence at the entrance gate.

The spill was contained within the refinery’s internal drainage system.  The product is being recovered from internal drains and will be re-processed.

Shell immediately implemented its emergency response plan, and the incident was attended by Sydney Fire Brigade and Police.

Emergency services applied a foam blanket to the spill and monitored air vapour levels.

No injuries were reported from the incident, and neighbouring industrial sites were not affected.

Access to the Shell Parramatta fuel terminal has been restricted, but this is not expected to affect supply to Sydney retail outlets.
