Why did you choose to do a Placement with Shell?
As my Economics Degree is so broad, I was looking for a company who was open to employees getting involved in a wide range of areas. The diverse range of prospects Shell had to offer was made known to me at a university conference, where they presented themselves as internationally minded. I also liked how they offered a wide variety of employment opportunities ranging from Finance and Planning, Commercial Services and External Affairs, as well as opportunities for learning more about the technical side of the business.
How would you describe your role at Shell?
My role as trainee economist involved working with the Planning and Economics team. I was responsible for assisting in the management of economic data. I also developed a template to improve the documentation process for some of the gas assets. A component of my project also included some work in economic modelling. I had to familiarise myself with industry specific information in tax legislation and transfer pricing as well as develop an understanding of the oil and gas assets in order to perform my role.
What were some of the challenges you faced in your Placement?
My placement was extremely challenging yet absolutely rewarding. My supervisors took my role very seriously and challenged me daily in order to develop me. Getting my head around some of the pricing information was difficult at first, but eventually it all fell into place. Making presentations to the company and the directors at first seemed daunting but I really enjoyed it. I learned that managing time as well as project planning has to flexible as well as realistic.
Was the experience what you hoped it would be?
The experience has given me a realistic view of what it takes to be successful as well as the confidence to think critically. The placement has far exceeded my expectations of what opportunities are out there and I especially enjoyed having close contact with some of the national directors. I have learnt a lot from them, as well as from the Planning and Economics team. Extracurricular aspects such as sailing, triathlons and social events were also impressive.
Has your Placement changed your view of Shell
Shell has changed my view of working life in many ways. Our Shell office in Perth was a lot more relaxed and casual than I expected. It’s a much better lifestyle than working for other firms in industries like accounting and law because you have the chance to sample a broad selection of roles in different teams. Although I worked for Planning and Economics, I have accepted a graduate role as a Business Analyst working for Commercial Services, another area I am interested in.
My Placement also showed me how committed Shell is to helping its employees achieve a good work/life balance. Shell’s commitment to the wider community is also amazing and there are so many prospects for employees to get involved.
