Why did you choose to do a Placement with Shell?
I chose do undertake a placement with Shell for a number of reasons. Principally, being a 12 week program meant that I was certain I could learn about the company from 'inside', and would be in a role long enough both to gain some valuable on the job experience as well as learn valuable workplace skills. Further, as Shell is such a large global company, I felt accepting a placement anywhere else would give me far less exposure.
How would you describe your role at Shell?
I was placed within the commercial finance division, and my main project was being responsible for undertaking a financial analysis. The analysis was the first undertaken in this particular area of the business, and forms part of a business case and the backbone of a solution going forward. I was required to interact with Shell staff from other areas within the company, interstate offices, and external suppliers.
What were some of the challenges you faced in your Placement?
As the costs had not previously been collated, I had to source information from other areas within the company, interstate offices, and external suppliers. Therefore, I had to work on my communication and networking skills. Working to deadlines is also difficult, as was deciding how to go forward with my project when certain plans didn't work out as expected.
Was the experience what you hoped it would be?
My time at Shell far exceeded my expectations. I was impressed that I was given 'ownership' of an important project that needed to be completed, one which allowed me to demonstrate my abilities. I was given the trust and opportunity to work independently without someone looking over my shoulder.
I had to manage my own workload and work to deadlines. I was encouraged to go with my gut, and have confidence in my own ability. Constructive feedback and advice was provided in a supportive environment, in order to improve my personal and professional development. I knew if I had an issue people were willing to help me, yet my work was challenging.
I was treated like part of the team, made to feel welcome and encouraged to contribute. In short, I loved the opportunities, freedom and responsibility I was given as a vacation student.
Has your placement changed your view of Shell?
Absolutely. I used to think of Shell as a place where I filled up my car. I now see it as a major energy company with a global reach, and a strong presence in Australia. I believe Shell can provide a variety of opportunities both locally and internationally, across different businesses and countries.
