Shell Internships Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Shell's Internship programme.

What will I do?

You will be given a specific project to complete during the 12 weeks you are with us.

The project will be specifically designed to stretch and challenge you so that we have a chance to test your abilities and you have a chance to see what it is really like to work for Shell.

During your time with us your efforts will be appraised by Senior Managers and you’ll benefit from the accurate feedback on just how well you’ve done, during, and at the end of your time with us.

Where are Internship placements located?

We have opportunities available in Victoria (Hawthorn East and Geelong Refinery), Perth and Brisbane (technical only).

When would I start?

Our Internship placements generally run from late November through to mid February.

What disciplines are you recruiting from?

We are interested in students currently studying in their penultimate year from the below disciplines:

Technical

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering
  • Environmental Science
  • Geosciences

Commercial

  • Business or Commerce
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Human Resources
  • Information Technology

In addition to this we have a limited number of places for technical students in their first or second year of study (Victoria only).

When is the opening/closing date for applications?

Applications for Summer Internships (2011/2012) open 1 August 2011 and will remain open until the 25 August.

Our selection process starts as soon as applications are submitted and will continue up until the application close date passes.  For this reason, we encourage you to apply as early as possible and not leave it until the last day!

I am studying in Australia but my home is elsewhere. Do you have any opportunities for me?

You need to have Australian PR or citizenship at the time of application to be eligible for the Internship placements we have available.

What are the criteria you look for in a recruit?

Firstly, we look for a credit average in university marks across all years of study.

Next we look at your level of extra-curricular activity - positions of leadership, involvement in clubs/societies/sporting associations, community work, Young Achievers etc.

We use this information to assess whether your university life has been more than a one-dimensional experience of academic achievement.

Why? Because we're looking for well-rounded people who've given things a try and experienced all life has to offer.

We gather the information we need from both your resume and the online application form. So make sure you take the time to read about our selection criteria and answer the application form questions with our criteria in mind.

Our standards are high but it's important to know that we're interested in the person, not just an academic record.

Do you have any hints or tips to help me submit my application?

It's important that you provide us with as much information about yourself as you can in your application.  It's also important that your familiarise yourself with the criteria mentioned above.  Remember to proof read your application before submitting!

How do I apply?

You can apply using Shell's online application system. After creating your profile, you will be required to complete three pre-registration questions to assess eligibility for Student opportunities. The next step is to select the opportunity you wish to apply for, and then complete the application form, attaching your CV/resume and most recent academic results.

Once you have submitted the application form and CV/resume there will be a short questionnaire to complete.

When Shell has received your completed form and questionnaire, your application will then be available for consideration.

We'll confirm that we have received your details within 48 hours of submission.

Please note that Shell (nor any of the organisations that recruit on our behalf) never ask for any money or payments from applicants, at any point in the recruitment process. All individuals who are successful in gaining an offer of employment from Shell, whether directly or indirectly, are always required to go through a formal recruitment process.
