Shell Internships

If you are accepted for an internship, you'll be able to see first hand what it's like to work for us.  Lasting for a period of 12 weeks, our internships are not only paid, they offer a chance to prove yourself in a challenging environment.  What's more, you'll be working on real projects that have been specifically matched to your interests and abilities.

  • What's it all about?

    As one of our interns, you’ll benefit from regular and structured performance evaluation from your mentor and direct supervisor. You’ll also receive direct feedback to help you to enhance your strengths and build on any areas for development.

    As your internship will be fully assessed against real tasks and targets, we gain a very rounded view of your skills and capabilities. Succeed in your internship and you could be offered a full-time position at Shell when you graduate. It’s a simple and direct route into Shell.

    Selection Criteria

    We have identified the following qualities as critical to high performance in Shell.  We seek students who demonstrate these attributes whether they are applying for the Graduate Program, Internships (vacation work), Gourami or Personal Development Awards.

    Capacity

    • The ability to analyse data quickly and learn fast, basing judgments on fact not sentiment;
    • Analysing outside existing boundaries to identify implications and learn from others;
    • The creativity to propose innovative solutions and manage uncertainty within complex environments to produce workable solutions.

    In other words, your analytical ability to place problems in a wide but relevant perspective.

    Achievement

    • The drive and enthusiasm to set themselves and others challenging unambiguous targets;
    • The resilience to deliver;
    • The courage and self-confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems and go against the crowd when necessary.

    In other words, your ability to get things done.

    Relationships

    • Genuine respect and concern for people and valuing everyone regardless of culture or status;
    • Demonstrating honesty and integrity in all their actions;
    • Creating trust by open and direct communications;
    • Persuading others by the inspiration, sensitivity and clarity of their argument;
    • Arranging clear means of communication and decision making.

    In other words, your ability to work efficiently with others in a team.

    Technical

    If you are applying for a technical position (ie: engineering/sciences), you’ll also be assessed against technical skill sets relevant to the specific role. You must be able to appreciate technical issues and be ready for technical challenge.

  • Can I participate?

    Shell offers internships to students currently studying in their penultimate year however we also have limited positions for early year students.

    Our internship program is open to undergraduates, masters or Ph.D. candidates. The majority of our internship opportunities will take place in Melbourne and Perth, but we do offer some positions in other states from time to time.

    All of our internships will take place during Summer holidays for a period of 12 weeks.

    Applications are open to students who are either permanent residents or Australian citizens at the time of applying.

    Applications for our 2012 Internship Program are now closed.  Applications for our graduate program will open in February 2012.

    Shell recruits Interns into a variety of technical and commercial roles.  We are seeking penultimate year students studying:

    Our internship placements will take place in Perth and Melbourne.

    In addition, we are offering limited places for students studying technical degrees who have completed their first year of studies. These early years positions will be located in Melbourne.

    I. Application / CV Review

    The first stage is for you to complete our online application form.  We recommend that you preview the application form and draft your open-ended answers on paper before starting and submitting your application.

    You will also need to prepare your CV/resume.

    II. Interview

    The interview will take place over the telephone and will last approximately 45 minutes. This is designed to give us an opportunity to investigate our selection criteria in more depth. You will be asked some behavioural questions relating to your previous experiences, achievements and challenges.

    In addition, you will also be asked to analyse a contemporary topic. Finally, you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about Shell and potential employment with us.

    This is an opportunity for you to tell us more about your achievements, the challenges you've faced and how you've demonstrated the qualities we're looking for.
